County Goals and Elm Grove Goals

The staff of Elm Grove Elementary School is committed to preparing every
student with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to be a successful, functioning
member of society. To that end, opportunities for the mastery of the basic skills of
reading, grammar, written and spoken English, listening, and using mathematics must be
provided to each student. The key to success will involve teachers and parents working
together to provide students with a broad range of high quality educational opportunities
designed for their intellectual and personal growth in the pursuit of meaningful
employment and responsible, informed citizenship in an ever-changing world. By working
together, interacting and communicating, the parents and school can improve learning and
the educational environment that can make a good school even better.

The ultimate goals of the school is the personal and social development of
students into productive, well-adjusted members of society. Their academic achievement
will reflect the best efforts of the school. By meeting their needs as individuals, we
will meet the needs of society. If we accomplish one, we accomplish the other. In an
effort to develop students to their fullest potential, the staff believes that:
- All children are capable of learning.
- Learning situations should be adapted to the needs of the individual.
- The rate of learning is not the same for all individuals.
- Progress is determined by individual ability.
- Parents need to be made aware of, and accountable for, the actions of their
children. A closer personal tie between home and school should be developed.
This philosophy of education must be a living, growing, integrated one. It must
meet the challenge of a changing society.

All learning for the child is based on the foundation of previous learnings.
Diagnostic and prescriptive approaches, based on the identification of skills and deficits
on a developmental continuum, are necessary for continuous learning and progress.
To achieve this, the educational program must include the following goals:
- To facilitate mastery basic skills needed for communication - reading, writing,
speaking, and listening.
- To facilitate the mastery of basic skills needed for mathematics competency.
- To prioritize the teaching of reading and mathematics and other communication
skills.
- To develop competencies in perceptual skills, physical coordination, body
mastery, and healthful living.
- To develop attitudes and beliefs necessary to function in a technological and
democratic society and to recognize the worth of each individual, of all racial and ethnic
groups.
- To base instruction on diagnostic and prescriptive results.
- To provide a process whereby students receive multiple services to facilitate a
successful transition from the home to the school and from early to middle childhood.
- To provide close interaction between the home and school through a program for
parent education and parent involvement.
