Regular attendance at school is essential for students to accomplish goals. When a student is absent, the parent(s)/guardian(s) must call the school by 9:00 to report an absence. A care call will be made to the home of absent students whose parent(s)/guardian(s) has not contacted the school. The student is to contact a classmate for assignment for a one-day absent. The school will provide assignments for absenteeism beyond two days, upon request.

The following are considered excused absents as established by the W. V. Board of Legislative Rule, Chapter 18:

1. Illness or injury of the student requiring physician’s verification
2. Medical or dental appointments which cannot be scheduled outside of the school day. The physician or dentist must verify absences in writing.
3. Illness of a student verified by parent, not to exceed three (3) consecutive days or five (5) total days per semester.
4. Illness or injury in family when student is verified as essential by a physician.
5. Calamity, such as fire in home, flood, or family emergency.
6. Death in family
7. Leaves of education value. School administrator prior to travel must approve leave.
8. School-approved curricular and extra-curricular activities.
9. Legal obligations with verification.
10. Failure of bus to run.
11. Observance of religious holidays.

 Upon returning to school, the student is required to present to the attendance officer a written excuse explaining the reason for being absent. Student absences are not considered excuses until written notification has been received.

* To achieve perfect attendance, a student may not have any absences, excused or unexcused.
