Andy, who graduated from Wheeling High School and West Liberty State College, started in Ohio County Schools during the 1969-1970 school year as a history teacher and the head basketball coach at Wheeling High School, where he stayed until 1976, the year he won his first state championship. Andy then moved to Wheeling Park High School when it opened in 1976.Mr. Sam Andy's 37-year coaching career within Ohio County Schools includes the best record in the Ohio Valley and second in the state of West Virginia. With two state championships in 1980 and 1995, Coach Andy also garnered one state runner-up title and four state semi-finalist honors during his career. He took the Wheeling Park High School boys' basketball team to the state tournament 16 times.Named the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1976 and 1995, Andy also was honored as the 2005 Dapper Dan Man of the Year. He has coached several OVAC All-Star teams and seven West Virginia All-Star teams. Four of his players have been named West Virginia Players of the Year, and he has coached 18 First Team All-Staters, 15 at Wheeling Park High School and three at Wheeling High School.
